Philippe Masse best album of 2022, and by a long run! Favorite track: I Can Die but Once.

pinkytheent Holy hell. I was expecting to like this album. I was not expecting to be GRIPPED, spellbound, and spine-chilled by this unrelenting charge of astonishing, vibrant, robust, and sparkling melodies that held me in its thrall through the final seconds. At many turns, I glanced at the remaining time in a song to eagerly hope that there was still far more in store. A swirling wonderland of chilling folk melody and incendiary black metal. I have not headbanged so hard in a long while. Favorite track: The Murky Deep.

Evan Nechochwen strikes again with another excellent album. If you like history and black metal, this is for you. Favorite track: Visions, Dreams, and Signs.
Leprous thumbnail
Leprous This is their best record yet. An absolute triumph. Mixing Folk, Black Metal, Doom, Death and heavy metal makes this for a varied and dynamic listen. I keep going back because it keeps surprising me. Favorite track: Generations of War.

West Maddox Absolutely incredible album. They completely pulled the true soul of West Virginia out of the land and turned it into beautiful nature black metal. The acoustic guitars interwoven into it are some of the best I've ever heard. It truly conjures an entire scene and transports the listener to the region. Favorite track: The Murky Deep.

Eric Gedenk I'm pretty picky with my metal tastes. This album completely blindsided me. One of my favorite releases so far this year--the whole thing is dynamic and passionate, and the performances display a TON of talent without ever feeling pretentious.

The first few Opeth albums keep looking over their shoulders... Favorite track: Visions, Dreams, and Signs.

Though Kanawha Black was inspired by events both factual and anecdotal in American prehistory and frontier history, the songwriting gradually progressed into an album that has a less earthy and more otherworldly atmosphere. As we tracked, mixed, and mastered this album over several years, Kanawha Black seemed to originate from and reside somewhere in the ether. On the surface, the songs’ topics continue to explore our region; Appalachia (specifically the Ohio River Valley of West Virginia and Ohio as well as the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania) continues to provide our greatest artistic influence. However, we hope that these songs will also convey to the listener that the essence of the past, even in fleeting moments in our modern lives, is still connected to us in many ways through natural mystery. Kanawha Black is our attempt to tap into the veil of this connection.
