Burial mounds sometimes started as a cremation on top of a platform or in a wooden house. After the house had been used many times, a final cremation would include the burning of the house itself, which would then be covered with a later of dirt. Subsequent burials woud make the mound taller. The smoke from these cremations would hopefully travel along man-made alignments to their celestial destination.
