Crimes against the Shawnee tribe were not taken lightly. When one was found guilty of and offense for which the only suitable punishment was death, a slow, torturous mutilation would be followed by mockery and burning at the stake. These condemned men and women were painted black and know as a Cut-ta-ho-tha.
