about

Red Ocher is the paint used for centuries in funeral rites and decoration of sacred objects. Its use was widespread among the Adena. Stone tablets with various designs have been found in Adena archaeological sites, believed to be used as "stampers" to dip into the red ocher paint and adorn the deceased. Lyrics are from "Delaware and Shawnee Vocabularies Recorded by Major Ebeneezer Denny at Fort M'Intosh & Fort Finney in 1785-1786." Despite speculation, no one knows what language was spoken by the ancient moundbuilders, so I chose words from later inhabitants of the Ohio Valley, the Shawnee.
