about
The Mesingw is a woodland spirit in the Lenape tradition. It is known for its mask-face with huge, intimidating eyes. In a traditional dance, the Mesingw could come out from where it dwells under the forest canopy to test your mental strength and will. With a stick or rattle and a healthy dose of fear, the Mesingw will attempt to knock you off rhythm and sabotage the dance. This spirit is not malevolent; it is one who is doing you a favor by giving you a challenge to face. The Eyes of Mesingw is inspired by an experience I had with the Mesingw in the Loyalhanna Valley.
