Only so much detail of mound builder burial rites can be gleaned from modern archaeology. Artifacts, radiocarbon dating, topography, and similarities to more modern tribes have told us much about how these burials were conducted. The find details are, of course, lost to history. Nevertheless, the spirit and intent of the reverence they had for their dead is obvious. Their death rituals were forgotten long ago but must have contained great power. The Forgotten Death Ritual is the soundtrack in my mind when I think of these rites. The words spoken, the sounds and emotions of losing a powerful member of a small clan and the hope that the spirit of the deceased would find its way to the next world.

Jordan Vauvert
