Ravaged by war and sickness, there came a time when most tribes faced an enormous dilemma; defend their people and territory to the death or move to the west, where conflict could be (at least temporarily) avoided. Some tribes, like the Shawnee, basically split in two, and to this day still have descendants in the east and West Across the Missi-theepi, the Grandmother of Rivers we call the Mississippi.
